The Catholic Campus Ministry at JMU offers its good will and charity to others in a variety of ways. Some of these service activities are:
Alternative Spring Break trips
CCM travels to several different places each Spring Break to serve the community in the name of God. Each year the locations may change, but there are always at least one domestic and one foreign trip. According to those who have traveled in the past, they are an extremely rewarding and fun way to serve others and in doing so, serve the Lord.
Big Brothers/Big Sisters
Help change the way kids grow up in Harrisonburg and Rockingham County! Volunteering with Big Brothers Big Sisters Harrisonburg-Rockingham County is one of the most direct ways you can give back to your community. Harrisonburg is home to many students, whether all year long or just during the semester- help young people in the area grow up to be strong, independent adults by developing positive relationships with children.
Blood drives
Each year CCM hosts several Red Cross blood drives. Help is needed in a number of ways from organizing donors, setting up the stations, or just donating life-giving blood.
Soup kitchen/Food pantry
The Blessed Sacrament Soup Kitchen is always in need of extra workers. Whether its a one-time volunteer experience or a regular practice, they will work with our schedule to get you in whenever works with you.
Relay for Life
CCM helps to raise money for cancer research and support those affected by the disease by hosting its own Relay team. Students wanting to help may by donating time, money, or support to the CCM team.
Nursing home visits and holiday card-making
Too frequently in our society are the elderely neglected of love and friendship when they live in Nursing homes. You can make a positive difference in the lives of elderely individuals by visiting or making holiday cards for them. Prior to visiting the Nursing home, there will be a short training and informational session for students.
Movie/Justice based discussion nights
Join your fellow CCMers in fellowship and chit-chat on specific themes!
Catholic Advocacy Day
There are a phenomenal amount of ways that basic human rights are neglected in our country and you can help by working with Congress to promote Catholic ideals and morality in legislature.
Gleaning
Picking vegetables and fruit in orchards around Harrisonburg for soup kitchens is a great way to help the less-fortunate in our community and to enjoy the breathtaking scenery of Autumn in the Shenandoah Valley.
Hispanic Ministries
Harrisonburg boasts a thriving Hispanic population and you can get involved in a number of fun ways!
Catholic Relief Services
Work with CCM to promote global justice and education.
Panera Pick-up
Panera graciously donates leftover bread to local soup kitchens and people are needed to pick up leftovers at the end of the night and take it to Blessed Sacrament.
HARTS
CCM is proud to join the Harrisonburg and Rockingham Thermal Shelter (HARTS) in hosting families and individuals seeking shelter from the frigid weather winter weather. There are a number of ways to help, from serving food to partifipating in social events like the Talent Show.
